Digital Documents Signing - Use Case Description

This demo use case will demonstrate the signing of documents using a Java Card with a demo certificate and the wireless card reader AirID.

We have selected two types of documents: PDF and DOC. Digital signatures are supported in Adobe Acrobat Reader and Microsoft Word, allowing you to add trust and integrity to your corporate documents.


1. Please check before you start:

For this use case you will require:

  1. A smart card, JCOP 2.4.1 with an applet and a test certificate (provided with the AirID Evaluation-Kit)
  2. An AirID Version 1, wireless smart card reader (provided with the AirID Evaluation-Kit)
  3. An computer running Windows 10 operating system with Bluetooth LE 4.0 enabled (if BLE not available onboard, a separate USB Bluetooth LE Adapter will be required). Please use a complet fresh system (clean Windows 10 installation) for this demo use case. 
  4. Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on the computer
  5. Administrative rights for installing new software on the computer

Please use this smart card and PIN for digital signing of documents demo use case:

  • User PIN: 123456

2. Initial Installation on Windows 10

This section describes the initial setup and basic configurations on Windows 10 which are required for the Windows based demo use case provided that no other prior installation has taken place.These steps are not necessary if there is a previous configuration for the secure logon use case.

  • AirID Driver and AirID Central Installation
  • Bluetooth Pairing
  • Smart Card Middleware Installation

2.1 AirID Driver and AirID Central Installation

Follow the steps below to install the AirID Windows Driver and the AirID Central App.

The AirID Central is a management App for your AirID. The App provides you with information and settings options for your AirID when your AirID is connected to your Windows device.

    1. Download the AirID Windows Setup AirID-Installer-1.0.18.0-beta10.exe
    2. Double click on the .exe installer file. 
    3. Follow the instructions in the installation wizard.

The AirID Windows Driver and the AirID Central App have been installed and the next step will be Bluetooth Pairing of the AirID with your computer. 

2.2 Bluetooth Pairing

To pair your Windows device with the AirID reader follow these steps:

    1. Insert your smart card to power on the AirID reader and activate Bluetooth at the AirID reader by navigating to the connection menu and pressing the jog dial control element. The AirID should display:

    2. Open Windows "Settings→ Devices→ BluetoothAdd new device". Your AirID should be listed with its serial number. Press "Pair"
    3. A six-digit pairing key will be show on AirID display  and also on the Windows 10 PC. If the PIN matches press Connect on the Windows 10 system and choose Yes on the AirID by scrolling down in the menu and pressing the jog dial control element

    4. After succesful pairing, "Your device is ready to go!" and the AirID serial number will be displayed on the Windows system and the device name of the paired device will be displayed on the AirID.

All the components needed for the AirID reader and for the smartcard have been installed and the next step will be the signing of documents.

If you already paired AirID with another device, please navigate to "Prefered Device" in the AirID menu press the Jog-Dial and choose "new". Then press the Jog-Dial again to confirm. 

3. Digitally Sign Documents

3.1 Digitally Sign PDF Documents

Follow the steps below to sign a PDF document:

    1. Please download https://get.adobe.com/de/reader/ and install Adobe Acrobat Reader 
    2. Download and open the sample document certgate_Testdocument_pdf.pdf in Adobe Acrobat Reader
    3. On the top left there are tabs, click on Tools and then, select the option Certificates
    4. Click on Digitally Sign
    5. With your mouse, draw a box where you want the signature to appear. A dialog box will appear which allows you to select Sign As. This will display your Digital ID.
    6. Select your Digital ID demo or certgate demo (Windows Digital ID) Issued by: certgate-CG-DC-AZURE-CA, Expires: .... Inside the dialog box you can check the certificate's details by clicking View Details.
    7. Click Continue and click Sign
    8. You will be required to save the document, type a name for you file, and click Save.
    9. Now you will be prompted to enter the smart card PIN. Insert the PIN (default 123456) and click OK
    10. The file shows a blue bar at the top of the screen indicating that the PDF document is signed.


The signature validation status shows you that the signature validity is UNKNOWN because the certificate has not been included in the list of trusted certificates and none of the parent certificates are trusted. This occurrs only with the provided demo certificate.

3.2 Digitally Sign DOC Files

Similar to PDF documents, DOC files can also be signed with a certificate located on your smart card. Follow the steps below to sign a MS Word document:  

    1. Download and open the sample document certgate_Testdokument_word.docx in Word.
    2. Place your cursor where you want the signature line to appear.
    3. Click Insert and then Signature Line → Microsoft Signature Line
    4. In the Signature Setup Window, enter the information that you want to appear below the signature line: e.g. Suggested signer demo and check the box Show sign date in signature line. When you are finished click OK.
    5. The signature field appears in the document. To insert your signature, right click on the signature line and then in the drop-down list click Sign.
    6. In the Sign window, in the box marked with X, type demo or another name.
    7. Next in the Sign window, click Change... and then in the Windows Security window select the certificate demo or certgate demo Issuer: certgate-CG-DC-AZURE-CA, Valid from:.. and click OK
    8. In the Sign window, click Sign
    9. Enter the smart card PIN (default 123456) and click OK
    10. Your document is now signed.
